Public Schools

Hello! We are an English speaking family from San Francisco California coming to Florence for three months on 1 February from Barcelona. Our children are 11 and 8 and I was wondering of there are any playgroups for older children? Also does anyone know if it is possible to enroll in public schools for short term. We are renting an apartment in Santa Croce and I’ve already contacted several of the classes from your recommendations. Thanks for the information and look forward to connecting! All the best, Jeannine jeanninemiles@yahoo.com

Help with schools, Anyone?

My child Lorenzo will start school in Sept 2012. He is Bilingual and we are moving to either Siena or Luca during the summer . We love both towns and are now assessing schools to see which area would suit our children best.

I have found references to Mimosa in Lucca and the international school in Siena. But can’t find any other recommendations for the public system or even other Italian private primary schools.

Is there are mums in those areas who might be able to help recommend others?

Expat Life

Lotuses bloom in mud: a meditation on an expat dream disfigured

Dear Readers,

We modern-day expats are fortunate in that we move around by choice: chasing job opportunities, new lifestyles (ugh–that word), even love. We are not typically motivated–like so many of our ancestors were–by hunger or persecution. In a way, I think this makes us a rarefied and spoiled bunch. We can look at things with the objectivity and aloofness of someone who has a lifeboat at the ready, should the ship sink. We always have, more or less, the luxury of leaving.

This weekend I had the pleasure to babysit for an amazing family that I am lucky to know.. they are genuinely nice people that understand I have a day job(s) and their kids are super awesome. So much so that even t-man comes along for the ride and is happy to do it.

This time for dinner after putting the kids to bed, we wanted to order take-out and for some reason I had it in my mind that the only options we had were the crappy pizza take-out that advertises like a taxi stand..

I have to admit , I am not a huge fashionista. My “style” tends to veer on the “safe” side while occasionally wearing a funky scarf ( ok I am a little obsessed with earrings.. ) and always boots.  I do appreciate vintage items EVEN if in Florence vintage tends to equal  $$$ ..unlike the markets in Los Angeles I used to frequent..

As promised in my previous post I am posting about our new tours! I had the pleasure of testing one them recently called— Walk Like An Etruscan.  As you probably guessed it has something to do with the Etruscans.  So back in the day…but I really mean back in the day…like 3000 years ago, the Etruscans built these cool streets into the soft tufa block that surrounded their villages.
